Below is a sample of a family biography included in the Moniteau County, Missouri History published in 1889 by Goodspeed.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details in a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Louis Kloeckner, of Linn Township, Moniteau County, was born in Cooper County, Mo., in 1842, and is a son of John A. and Catherine (Kern) Kloeckner, both natives of Bavaria, the former born in 1805 and the latter in 1814. The father was a teacher by profession, which he followed ten years in his native country. He married in 1830, and in the fall of 1836 immigrated to America, landing at Baltimore, Md., where they remained one winter, and in the spring of 1837 removed to Boonville, Mo. He purchased a farm of one hundred acres a short distance east of Boonville, which he partly improved, and cultivated eighteen years, at the expiration of that time removing to Linn Township, Moniteau County, where he lived until his death, which occurred April 7, 1886. He was a member of the Evangelical Church, of which church his wife, who survives him, is also a member. They had ten children, of whom Caroline, wife of William Hobrecht, died, leaving four children; Josephine, wife of Leonard Smith, died, leaving six children; one died at the age of fourteen and two in infancy. The four living are Philopena Hafferburg (a widow living in Cooper County, Mo.), Margaret Blank, Mary and Louis. The latter received his education from his father, and grew to maturity on the farm. During the late war he served in Company C. Forty-fifth Missouri Regiment, Union army, which was afterward consolidated with the Fiftieth Regiment. He enlisted for one year, but peace was declared after eleven months, and he was discharged at St. Louis. Since the war he has been engaged in farming. May 20, 1880, Mr. Kloeckner married Rosa Maas, who was born in Wisconsin in 1850, and is a daughter of Daniel and Mary D. (Schrieber) Maas, natives of Prussia, who immigrated to the United States in 1849, the following year settling in Wisconsin, and from there to Missouri in 1859, locating in Moniteau County in 1863, where the father died in 1882. He was born October 8, 1810, and was a member of the Evangelical Church, of which church his wife, who still survives him, is also a member. They had two children, August and Rosa, the former of whom died December 12, 1877. Mr. and Mrs. Kloeckner have three children: Lilly R., Dora A. and Clara M. The parents are members of the Evangelical Church, and are representative residents of the township. Mr. Kloeckner votes the Republican ticket.
